About our Club

Porthleven Gig Club is a small and friendly club catering for all age groups and abilities. Our aim is to promote a healthy enjoyable sport which appeals to both competitive and social rowers alike. The club regularly attends events mainly in the local area. We also host two main events during the rowing calendar. These are our own Gig Day and the Across the Bay race. The Across the Bay race runs a gruelling one hour distance from Marazion to Porthleven and is well supported by local clubs and local people.

We warmly welcome new rowers to the club. There is no pressure to become involved in the racing side of the sport. However we usually find that once a rower has got their toe in the water they discover how exhilarating it is and are keen to continue. We run regular sessions throughout the week, Sundays are particularly suited to those just wishing to enjoy the social aspects of rowing. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy one of the most picturesque coastlines and social rowers find this experience incredibly relaxing.

The club is self funding, relying heavily on social events and donations from local sponsors. During the winter months the Juniors train each week at Stithians Reservoir in our fibre glass gig Lowen Mor. The adults continue to train from Porthleven with the option of using Stithians Reservoir when the need arises. Last year we introduced regular circuit training sessions during the winter to keep fitness levels up and continue to meet socially.

Each year we train hard for the World Gig Club Championships in the Isles of Scilly, held on the first bank holiday weekend in May.  This is a very rewarding and enjoyable event attended by over one hundred gig rowing clubs worldwide.
