Lowen Mor (Happy Sea)

Friday 16th April 2010 saw another milestone for the Porthleven Gig Club. In our 20th Anniversary we launched our third gig, Lowen Mor (Happy Sea). The conditions were perfect for the event, which took place in the evening. It was well attended by gig rowers, sponsors and villagers. Doctor Brian Lawton opened the proceedings by thanking all the sponsors who have supported the club and in particular to "Our Money Your Dream" who made it all possible by awarding the club’s juniors a £10,000 grant. Tescos, amongst others was thanked for allowing the juniors to fundraise there recently raising £600 back packing. This enabled the juniors to buy club hoodies. Pastor Glen Chaplin blessed the gig and all those who row in her. The club’s President, Ted Gundry acknowledged the hard work of the juniors in securing the grant. He described the event 20 years previously, when the Energetic was launched in the same spot. Ian Oliver, who had led the juniors in securing this grant was then presented with a framed picture of Lowen Mor signed by the juniors. Champagne was poured over the bow to complete the launch by the girls' captain, Jade Billing, the boys' captain, Ryan Williams and Louis Williams who had chosen the name for the gig, all of whom are pupils at Helston Community College. Onlookers were delighted to see the juniors row Lowen Mor out of the harbour for the first time.
